Samue (or samui) is the clothing worn by Zen Buddist monks when performing their daily chores (samue).
"Samue" originally referred to any clothing worn while performing work, and did not have a specific shape. Monks wear it when they do work to maintain the temple, such as cleaning, chopping firewood, and farming. Because it is work clothing, it is not worn during formal zazen or memorial service.
It is now popular for casual wear, meditation, and as loungewear, offering comfort and ease of movement.
